BASS GUITAR/DOUBLE BASS – FOUNDATION PHASE
Students learn the fundamentals of playing, ear training and notation. This includes correct posture and practical technique. They are introduced to reading notes, as well as counting rhythms and basic symbols. They work on learning how to practice effectively and also develop routines to support their progress. If they have some experience on the instrument already, these skills are refined. This phase allows students to see if they enjoy the instrument and find out if they are compatible with their teacher. Music lessons are a commitment so above all this phase can show how well students can incorporate lessons and practice into their lifestyle.
BASS GUITAR/DOUBLE BASS – STREAMS PHASE
Students can sit The Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) music qualifications. This AMEB STREAM covers Preliminary-Grade 8 and above and similarly the Music Theory exams in the later levels. These exams are a terrific way for students to further develop their general musical skills. The exam is mostly practical (playing technical work and pieces). Students will find that listening, general knowledge and sight-reading skills are also covered. AMEB students receive comments from an examiner and a certificate upon completion. AMEB exams take place in Hawthorn. Costs incurred include exam enrolment and AMEB print materials.
Within the AMEB format, students can study in the following styles: Double Bass and similarly CPM Bass Guitar and RockSchool Bass Guitar.
School Repertoire Stream
Students who are already playing in their school programs will participate in a slightly different FOUNDATION phase before working on their repertoire. This could include learning songs for upcoming concerts and supporting students in VCE Music.
Students who elect to do the CONTEMPORARY STREAM work on one of the following various styles: Pop, Rock, Soul, RnB, Music Theatre etc. They build on the technique they developed in the FOUNDATION phase and also develop an understanding of the symbols, markings and techniques. Students are encouraged to learn about different artists within the style and additionally, they expand their skills to basic chords and playing patterns.
BASS GUITAR/DOUBLE BASS – PERFORMANCE PHASE
Students perform pieces they have worked on in the previous STREAM phase or similarly new pieces from the same style as a soloist or part of an ensemble. Students learn how to plan chunked practice as they move towards performance. This might include problem-solving as well as progression points. With their teachers, students talk about managing nerves, improving concentration and furthermore their growth as performers. Students can perform publicly at Chasing Sound events or recorded in lessons — a product of the phase.
BASS GUITAR/DOUBLE BASS – SPECIALISATION PHASE
Students can revisit and expand upon a style they worked through in the earlier STREAMS phase. Alternatively, they can take a creative step forward into song-writing, composition or improvisation. This stream allows a student to consolidate the work they have done in the previous phases. Students would not be able to transition into this phase without having done the others in order.
BASS GUITAR/DOUBLE BASS – SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING PHASE
Empowered with the relevant skills, stylistic understanding and self-awareness, students direct their own musical pathways. They do so with the support of their Chasing Sound Music School teacher and community.
